The Co-ordinator will then attend an introductory meeting between the client and volunteer, before the volunteer provides on-going support to the client through their bereavement.

Cornwall’s two Silver Dreams projects Active Plus and Bbass are now working together following a meeting last week.

Active Plus Silver Dreams delivers 6 week courses to people aged over 50 that are unemployed, have become socially isolated, are suffering ill health and wellbeing, hospital leavers or are carers. The content of the course is designed to improve communication and teamwork skills and encourage social interaction through a variety of practical teamwork and problem solving activities, to ensure people are safe and secure at home the course provides training in Fire Safety, Crime Prevention, First aid, CPR and basic IT skills. The goal is to encourage and support the group to become involved in volunteering with the local community, participation in other activities or to continue meeting as a group to provide support and friendship to each other. During the 6 weeks other advice and guidance is provided depending on the groups needs, this includes fall prevention, employability training, healthy eating, fitness and health and the presence of local groups to discuss activities and opportunities.

Towards the end of each course, one of the Co-ordinators from Bbass will be attending to offer the groups the opportunity to volunteer with Bbass, putting their improved communication skills and social interaction to good use as befrienders or advocates.

The partnership doesn’t end there though, as our volunteers will have the opportunity to refer their clients to Active Plus. By refering their client’s we hope that this will help our volunteers to support their client’s to increase their social interaction, make new friends and learn new skills which will ultimately provide client’s with a focus once they leave Bbass.

Following a series of meetings with the Counselling Faculty Lead, Colin Wilson at Cornwall College, Bbass is delighted that some of their students will now be volunteering with us.

The students who are all working towards NCFE, Advanced Certificate or Diplomas in Counselling Skills all need the opportunity to practice their skills as part of their learning. In particular the Diploma students have to complete 150 hours of skills practice to attain their qualification, with others are actively encouraged by the college to practice their skills learned on their courses.

Whilst Bbass does not offer counselling services, having volunteers with these skills will allow Bbass to provide quality support to those clients, who have more complex or higher needs than we may have been able to offer support to.

Our Co-ordinators will undertake an assessment of a client’s needs when they are referred to Bbass and will then match them with an appropriate volunteer based upon the volunteer’s skills, experience, knowledge, time they are able to offer and interests.

Whilst we are delighted to have students from the college with these skills volunteering with us, this of course does not stop our volunteers who have joined us through other routes working with our more challenging clients if they express a desire to do so and demonstrate the necessary skills.

Some of the first group of students have attended their Service Induction and once they have completed their Bereavement Awareness course they will be working with Bbass clients. Others will shortly be attending a further Service Induction and are looking forward to working with clients in the near future.

The best day we have had so far was on 18th January, when we had 247 visitors in response to a newsletter we sent via Volunteer Cornwall.

Thank you for your support once again, Bbass Team.
