First Client Referrals received

Working in partnership with Macmillan Nurses, Bbass has now received it first client referral from Macmillan’s nursing team.

The client will be contacted by one of our Co-ordinators who will undertake an initial meeting with them. Once the meeting has taken place the Co-ordinator will match one of our newly trained volunteers to work with the client.

The Co-ordinator will then attend an introductory meeting between the client and volunteer, before the volunteer provides on-going support to the client through their bereavement.

First Volunteers Complete Training

We’re delighted that our first group of 14 volunteers have completed their training and are now ready to work with their first clients.

Over 5 days of training our volunteers covered: -

  • Bbass Induction
  • Equality & Diversity
  • Befriending & Mentoring
  • Loss & Bereavement
  • Bbass Advocacy

The feedback from the training has been really positive with one attendee commenting “I found it very informative and thought your passion shone through. I feel honoured to be part of this new much needed service and am looking forward to seeing it grow…”

If you can spare some time each week to help and support someone who has suffered bereavement, use the “Get in Touch” section at the top and one of our Co-ordinators will be in touch with you.

Silver Dreams projects working together

Cornwall’s two Silver Dreams projects Active Plus and Bbass are now working together following a meeting last week.

Active Plus Silver Dreams delivers 6 week courses to people aged over 50 that are unemployed, have become socially isolated, are suffering ill health and wellbeing, hospital leavers or are carers. The content of the course is designed to improve communication and teamwork skills and encourage social interaction through a variety of practical teamwork and problem solving activities, to ensure people are safe and secure at home the course provides training in Fire Safety, Crime Prevention, First aid, CPR and basic IT skills. The goal is to encourage and support the group to become involved in volunteering with the local community, participation in other activities or to continue meeting as a group to provide support and friendship to each other. During the 6 weeks other advice and guidance is provided depending on the groups needs, this includes fall prevention, employability training, healthy eating, fitness and health and the presence of local groups to discuss activities and opportunities.

Towards the end of each course, one of the Co-ordinators from Bbass will be attending to offer the groups the opportunity to volunteer with Bbass, putting their improved communication skills and social interaction to good use as befrienders or advocates.

The partnership doesn’t end there though, as our volunteers will have the opportunity to refer their clients to Active Plus. By refering their client’s we hope that this will help our volunteers to support their client’s to increase their social interaction, make new friends and learn new skills which will ultimately provide client’s with a focus once they leave Bbass.

Working with Cornwall College

Following a series of meetings with the Counselling Faculty Lead, Colin Wilson at Cornwall College, Bbass is delighted that some of their students will now be volunteering with us.

The students who are all working towards NCFE, Advanced Certificate or Diplomas in Counselling Skills all need the opportunity to practice their skills as part of their learning. In particular the Diploma students have to complete 150 hours of skills practice to attain their qualification, with others are actively encouraged by the college to practice their skills learned on their courses.

Whilst Bbass does not offer counselling services, having volunteers with these skills will allow Bbass to provide quality support to those clients, who have more complex or higher needs than we may have been able to offer support to.

Our Co-ordinators will undertake an assessment of a client’s needs when they are referred to Bbass and will then match them with an appropriate volunteer based upon the volunteer’s skills, experience, knowledge, time they are able to offer and interests.

Whilst we are delighted to have students from the college with these skills volunteering with us, this of course does not stop our volunteers who have joined us through other routes working with our more challenging clients if they express a desire to do so and demonstrate the necessary skills.

Some of the first group of students have attended their Service Induction and once they have completed their Bereavement Awareness course they will be working with Bbass clients. Others will shortly be attending a further Service Induction and are looking forward to working with clients in the near future.

We’ve Had 1000 Visitors

A ‘Big’ thank you to everyone who has visited Bbass Silver Dreams blog. Today we reached a milestone of 1000 visitors to the site. The majority of the visits have been to the recruitment page but there has been a good spread across all the pages.
The best day we have had so far was on 18th January, when we had 247 visitors in response to a newsletter we sent via Volunteer Cornwall.

Thank you for your support once again, Bbass Team.

Day One of the Recruitment Campaign

The recruitment campaign is going well. On the first day we have had 1111 opens on newsletter that resulted in 275 hits on Bbass recruitment page. It’s become quite addictive watching the hits go up steadily throughout the day. It’s all linked to my iPhone, so wherever I am I can see how the campaign is going.

The Language of Bereavement and Grief

Radio4 – Word of Mouth – 14th January 2013 - Program on bereavement.

The language of bereavement and grief are explored by writer Michael Rosen, as he talks to psychologists, teachers, hospice workers, childrens charities, and visits a Death Cafe.

Winstons Wish is a charity for children who have lost a parent, brother or sister. Michael sits in on a training session for teachers and carers in Cheltenham, and discovers how the language we use can either confuse or comfort young children. He talks to psychologist Colin Murray Parkes about the stages of grieving and the psychological complexity of dealing with loss. And he visits a Death Cafe, where like-minded people come together to discuss anything and everything about death and dying, whilst
enjoying tea and cake.
