Consultant Cardio-thoracic surgeon
Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust
Trained in UK after obtaining primary medical qualification in Athens Greece. I have worked as
consultant surgeon in Edinburgh and currently in Leeds.
I have a keen interest in teaching and training and have been faculty of several courses (PAR, BSS,
CCrISP, CALS). I have a certificate in medical education from University of Dundee.
I have published several papers on the topic of technical skills training as well as crew resource
management skills.
Practicing surgical skills can be done at home with simulation models based on readily available
materials and feedback is required as part of a formative assessment. You practice not until you get
it right but until you cannot get it wrong.
In my opinion a trainer should be able to deconstruct a skill into its basic elements and they need to
be able to recognise what the trainee needs to do to progress towards competency. This involves
not only traditional cognitive intelligence skills but also, and probably more importantly, emotional
intelligence skills such as flexibility, self-control and empathy that will allow objective analysis,
correct diagnosis and appropriate direction towards the visualised goal of a surgeon with technical
fluency and in harmonious relationship with his/her working environment and team.
